From an Owner:
The
temperament of the Afghan Hound closely resembles that of a cat. He
wants to be petted, for awhile, then he goes and lays on the couch. Afghans are fiercely
loyal to their families, and when raised with
children are very kind and gentle with them. Afghan Hounds can also be boisterous clowns, throwing toys in the air to catch and
pouncing
on anything that moves, much like a cat.
It has been said, by
non-afghan owners, that the Afghan Hound is not very
smart. Quite the opposite is the case. The Afghan Hound doesn't
respond to food or tricks that trainers often use. They are quick to
learn many things: How to open doors, crates, refrigerators - there is
almost nothing that can
keep an Afghan out of somewhere he wants to be. They can also be
very good at obedience, if they want to be, but they become easily
bored with constant repetition.
An Afghan Hound's luxurious coat is one of
the things that set him apart from other dogs. Afghans come in a
wide variety of colors, all of which are acceptable.
The Afghan Hound is not for everyone. You
have to be willing to devote many hours to the upkeep of your
hound's coat, with bathing once a week to keep him looking his best.
Being the King of Dogs, he demands total devotion; luckily this is
not difficult to give. Afghan Hounds are like Lays potato chips,
"Bet you can't have just one." I often say, "I do not
raise Afghan Hounds; they are kind enough to let me take care of
them."
