CHESAPEAKE
BAY RETRIEVER
Characteristics,
care, health & breeder listings below.

 | Chesapeakes
are, if anything, a versatile breed and have a history of
participating in many diverse areas such as hunting, sled & cart
work, backpacking, tracking, and search & find. Consider the fun
sports of flyball, agility, weight pulls, skijoring, water rescue
and anything else that tickles your fancy!
Bearing the reputation as a hard-head, he retains the mental
toughness and independent single-mindedness so necessary for his
early work. Once the Chessie knows who is giving the orders, he is a
hard and willing worker. There are excellent breed members in
obedience and field trials, as well as weekend gunner's companions.
This is a devoted family dog who loves children and is a water lover
extraordinaire. Although most families could hardly provide the kind
of work performed by one early dog, who “all his life worked an
average of five days of every seven,” it is necessary to
provide a Chesapeake with adequate exercise and some kind of job to
make him - and consequently his owner - content.
We believe that basic training is essential for any dog; however,
Chesapeakes have a particularly strong need for adequate exercise as
well as a job to perform. Doing so is not only an enjoyable pastime,
but will also result in a dog who is most attentive and responsive
to you.
This is a dominant breed needing firm owners. With firm, consistent
training they make marvelous companions. Rugged individuals, they
are a dual purpose breed and can be shown and hunted the same
weekend. We are very proud of the Dual Champions in our breed, proving
they can have beauty and ability.
