Dachshunds
come in two sizes: Miniature and standard. There are also three coat types:
Smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired.

Size: Bred
and shown in two sizes, standard and miniature. Miniatures are not a
separate classification but compete in a class division for "11
pounds and under at 12 months of age and older." Weight of the
standard size is usually between 16 and 32 pounds.
Color: Although
base color of the coat is immaterial, certain patterns and basic
colors predominate. |
 | Basic
Requirements: Dachshunds
require a moderate-sized yard in which to exercise. Weekly brushing
will do for shorthaired Dachshunds. Longhaired varieties need
occasional trimming. Wirehaired Dachshunds need occasional
stripping. |
 | Temperament:
Bold,
lively, and friendly, Dachshunds make good family dogs. They do best
with older children. They make good watchdogs, barking when a
stranger comes to the door. |
