It is common for the males to hold color better and for the females to lighten (or grizzle) along the top of the back. Males are usually 10-20 lbs. heavier than a female and differences in temperament are NOT based upon the dogs' gender. AKC Height: Ideally, males 24" to 26"; females 22" to 24". Color: Variable except for white, which is disqualified in the show ring. Strong rich colors are preferred.

Basic Requirements: Early socialization and training is important. German Shepherds need a large, well-fenced yard in which to exercise.

Temperament: German Shepherds are intelligent dogs. They are generally good with children if raised with them. Ask to see the parents to get an idea of their temperament. Select a happy, outgoing puppy. German Shepherds make good watchdogs and are often used for police work. They are very loyal to their owners.

Health (Health Dictionary click here) Average lifespan is 12 years. Watch for Hip/Elbow Dysplasia, Bloat, Cataracts, Congenital Esophageal Achalasia, Epilepsy, Hemophilia, Disk Disease, PRA, Von Willebrand's Disease
