Quote from an Owner

Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens are, in size, the big brother to the more well-known Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. They have many similarities. The biggest difference is in height, head size, and length of ears.  Actually,  in France there are 4 breeds of the Griffon Vendeens, all of different sizes. The Grand Griffon Vendeen, the Briquet Griffon Vendeen, and the two Basset types. Not many generations back, the two Basset types were same breed-the Basset Griffon Vendeen. The Grand Basset is a happy and confident dog with lots of personality, but most of all he is a hunter. The breed is alert to scent and all that moves, so you must be constantly on your toes if walking your Grand without a leash, or have a garden without a fence. The Grand is a pack dog, so he does not adapt well to being left alone for too many hours a day, but the presence of another dog or a cat can help him in his loneliness.

Basic Requirements

Unless your Grand is dirty or smells bad, you don't need to bath him; it will only make his coat soft and take out the natural dirt resistance. The Grand needs a good combing once a week, and a trimming at least once or twice a year to keep his coat in good condition. To keep his body in good condition he needs medium exercise, and he really enjoys a good, long walk or to run around in the garden, playing with a friend.

Temperament The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen are very devoted family pets, adore children, are a little bit reserved towards strangers, are good watch dogs, but cannot be used as guard dogs. They are charming, clever, and eager, but also stubborn and with a mind of their own.  So, in training your Grand you have to be very consistent-firm but with a gentle hand.

Health (Health Dictionary click here) The breed is generally healthy. Watch for ear infections. Keep hair trimmed from the inside of the ear, and make sure the ears are free from moisture to help prevent bacteria growth.
