The Rhodesian Ridgeback is NOT a breed for everyone.  They are strong, and do need basic obedience training.  They are considered a sighthound by the AKC, which explains their intelligent thinking. They can be stubborn, can have selective hearing like a sighthound, and yet they can be high-scoring dog at an obedience trial.
Ridgebacks are in love with their family and will protect them by barking at strangers and holding them "at bay" until their owner tells them it's fine.  Ridgebacks have been known to greet someone by walking up to them and putting their nose in their "private" area.  There are two types of Ridgebacks, the "Mastiff" looking body and the "Greyhound" looking body.  They have two color types.: A black color muzzle, nose and nails; or the liver (flesh) color face, nose and nails.  A little white on the chest or toes is acceptable.  Some people claim the two colors have slightly different personalities, as the liver-nose is also called a lover-nose because they are more bonded and clingy to their family and claim one person in their family as "theirs."  Ridgebacks do get along with other breeds if introduced slowly, as is the case with many breeds.  They accept other family pets as part of their family indoors, but outside those pets, and other wildlife, are considered fair game to chase.
